This has been a crazy summer already and we are only a few weeks in! We have already enjoyed a ton of pool time, hiking, a road trip to Alabama, and lots and lots of yummy fruits and veggies from the garden.
However, it has also been a stressful summer for me and my family. On June 19th my dad was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma which is cancer in the plasma cells and lives in the bone marrow. The night of the diagnosis he had a heart attack. Multiple Myeloma causes low hemoglobin and large platelets. The blood is thick and moves slowly through the body. After a few days in the hospital and many new meds he is recovering nicely. A few days later he started the cancer treatments.
Today multiple myeloma is highly treatable. There is no cure, but the doctor said with treatment he will live 10+ years easily. Who knows what other treatments may become available in the next decade. We have to wait a few more months to see how well he is responding to the treatment, but there are many options. Not too long ago, the outcome for this type of cancer was bleak with patients given just a short time to live. We are so very grateful for the research that has gone into this disease that has given us more time with dad.
This is not the first time my family has dealt with cancer. 20 years ago my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. She had a mastectomy and chemo and has been in remission ever since. To celebrate this 20 year anniversary and in light of the immense gratitude we have for advancements in treating both my mom and dad’s cancer, I am donating 20% of the proceeds from every portrait session booked between now and October 31 to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. I chose St. Jude’s because I know the anxiety and fear I have felt with my parent’s diagnoses as well as the relief to know there is a treatment that works. It must be a million times more intense for a parent to go through this with their child. I’m sure the research they have done for children has also benefited cancer patients of all ages.
Now is the time to book senior portraits and what better time than summer and fall for family portraits! Each session is $250 for approximately 2 hours. You’ll receive a thumb drive of all your final pictures and an 8×8 coffee table book. And $50 from each session goes directly to St. Jude! In addition, 20% of any additional print orders from your session will also go to the fundraiser.
Send me a text, email, or call to book your appointment today! And keep up on the progress we’ve made by going to http://fundraising.stjude.org/jennadarcyphotography
