For awhile now I have wanted to write about one of my biggest sources of inspiration: German photographers Anna and Bernhard Blume. To me, I see them as a very close couple, a couple that does everything together. I picture them in a retro kitchen playing cards, drink in hand, when Anna decides to run into the living room and jump off the couch while Bernhard snaps a photo at the perfect time. They have a good chuckle, and decide to use up the roll with more shenanigans so they can develop the film and laugh over the funny faces they’ve made. In reality, their work had much more meaning than a simple evening at home. They had messages to deliver and they did so with eye-catching humor. You can read about their life, education and bodies of work, but when I read about the meaning behind the images, it almost becomes sad instead of funny. I have actually stopped reading further about each body of work, as I prefer to imagine them as I did at the outset. Perhaps that is unkind because it is not what they intended, but it is what keeps them as an inspiration for me.
This compilation of their work is the best minute and a half you’ll spend today, enjoy!
